1. Definition of Top Drive System (TDS)
A top drive system (TDS) is advanced drilling equipment driven by suspended electric or hydraulic motors to provide torque for drill string rotation. It replaces traditional rotary tables and kelly drives, greatly boosting drilling efficiency, lowering labor demand and improving operational safety. Its core assemblies include main motor, air cooling unit, brake, gearbox, gooseneck, rotating head, tilting & counterbalance structure, backup tongs, pipe handler, hydraulic unit, guide rails, electric control cabinet and service loops.
